Love Is Like a Heat Wave-Thursday

1. Explain the difference between a metaphor and a simile. Is the title of this song an example of a simile or a metaphor? Explain how you came to that answer.
2. Identify two other metaphors in this song. Tell us what they are and what stanza you found them in.
3. There are several words in this song that are different on the paper than they are on the CD. Give us AT LEAST two examples of this.
MAKE SURE YOUR NAME IS ON THIS POST!!!

Do Anything You Want to Do-Wednesday

1. Tell us the number of lines and the number of stanzas.
2. Copy and explain the metaphor in stanza 5. Do you ever feel like a puppet on a string? Explain.
3. The final stanza appears to have absolutely nothing to do with the rest of the song. Can you explain why Thin Lizzy chose to put it there?
4.List all of the words in the first stanza that rhyme. Where do they fall in the stanza? Are they always at the end of a line?
5. In stanza 3, there are 5 words that are spelled with an s that we would normally spell with a z. List the five words then explain why they are "misspelled." (HINT: if you're not sure, then copy and paste some of the words from stanza 3 into the online dictionary [follow the link below] and see what spellings for those words the dictionary gives you.)
6. Use this link to an online dictionary to look up insinuate, intimidate, complicate, and hesitate. Copy their definitions into your post. http://encarta.msn.com/encnet/features/dictionary/dictionaryhome.aspx
7. Remember: If you finish early, then you should respond to the "Lyrics Comparison" prompt. I haven't received many of those yet and it's already Wednesday...

Love That Dog discussion questions for Monday

These are the questions on Love That Dog that you were supposed to do in class but those pesky copies have walked off on us. So, please answer the following questions on YOUR OWN PAPER and turn them in to the substitute. THEY MUST BE DONE BY THE TIME I GET BACK!1.We only get one side of the conversation (Jack's) and never what the teacher writes or says to him. Why did the author do this?2.Love That Dog is written differently than other stories, kind of a journal with poems. Why do you think the author choose to write it like this?3.Jack says "Maybe the …poet was just making a picture with words and someone else…typed it up and then people though it was a poem because it looked like one typed up like that." Did Sharon Creech write poems for this book or are they poems because this was how it was typed?4.Jack says, "If that is a poem about the red wheelbarrow and the white chickens then any words can be a poem. You've just got to make short lines." Do you agree?5.What does "anonymous" mean? Why didn't Jack want his name on his poems? Have you ever wanted to share something you created but be anonymous?6.How did you feel after reading Jack's poem called "My Sky" (p. 68)?7.Who is your favorite author or poet?8.Which was your favorite poem in Love That Dog?9.Why does poetry allow Jack to finally share his sadness about his dog?
